Smokefeather padded after Heatherclaw, watching when his Clanmate went after the scent of a rabbit. After a moment of silence after the chase, Smokefeather scented the air and listened for signs of more prey. Naturally, most rabbits would be in their burrow by now. But he had to try. Smokefeather padded a little ways from Heatherclaw, listening and smelling with the patience of a trained hunter. He parted his jaws to allow the scents to flow into his palate. The scent of mouse caught his attention, and he turned to look at a patch of gorse where he could faintly hear the scuffling of litte paws. Smokefeather watched for a moment and then began to edge downwind of the prey. Creeping forward, Smokefeather crouched by the bush and waited for the mouse to move towards the edge of the bush. When the brown flash came in sight, he sprang. But his landing was clumsy, due to his shoulder, and the mouse managed to slip from his paws. Smokefeather darted after it, showing the speed and coordination of his WindClan heritage. But despite his best efforts, he could not ignore the pain in his leg, and it slowed him enough to allow the mouse to reach its burrow before he could catch it. Smokefeather cursed under his breath, pausing to allow his shoulder the time it needed to relax from its strain.

Smokefeather bristled a little at the warrior's comment, but then he relaxed and shook his head. Heatherclaw meant well. He just didn't understand the extent of the injury.
"It's the cold weather, mostly," he meowed. "Makes it worse than usual." He flexed the muscles of his shoulder and winced. The pain was bearable now, at least. Smokefeather unsheathed his claws and glanced about the moorlands, eager to get another chance.
"Good catch, by the way. Hopefully we can find more prey out in this weather."

Smokefeather pricked his ears and glanced in the direction Heatherclaw was looking. He parted his jaws to scent the air and flicked his tail.
"Blackbird. Probably searching for food near some of those bushes," he meowed, motioning with his tail. "We should work together on this one, I think." Birds were difficult to catch on the moors. But Smokefeather was at least very good at leaping, so if Heatherclaw could draw it out he would be able to catch it in his claws before it could fly away.

Smokefeather nodded, glad that his Clanmate was in agreement with him. He edged along the moors towards the bushes, keeping his senses trained on the bird and on Heatherclaw. He paused when he noticed his Clanmate was in place, and so Smokefeather crouched, flexing his hindquarters and preparing to leap. The blackbird flew out of the bushes as Heatherclaw rushed at it, and Smokefeather pushed himself into the air. His body spiraled as he reached up and snagged the blackbird's wing. Pulling it to earth, he bit down on its neck with the speed and precision of a deadly hunter. He flicked the blood from his muzzle and looked over at Heatherclaw, his eyes shining.
"Good work!" he meowed.

Smokefeather looked at the blackbird and tipped his head to one side--his version of a shrug, since actually shrugging his shoulders sometimes pulled the injury.
"I might be able to carry a little more than this blackbird, but I can't imagine you can carry more than that rabbit of yours," he meowed with a slight smile.

Heatherclaw smiled " Well just have to see about that." He looked around the moorland. He opened his mouth and scented the air. "I can smell mouse and rabbit near by. What about you?" He asked smokefeather

Smokefeather nodded slightly and then turned his attention back to the wind, which carried only faint traces of preyscent. It was getting too cold. Soon prey would be burrowing up for the winter. Smokefeather slid his claws from their sheathes, nipping the inside of his cheek as he tried to think of places where prey might still be hiding. He pricked his ears when he thought he heard the telltale signs of rabbit feet scampering across the moors. There! In an instant he was after it, his paws flying as he tracked the rabbit across the moor. He noticed a dark hole in its line of sight and hoped that Heatherclaw was behind him to take up the chase. Smokefeather flew to the burrow and stood over it. The rabbit shied off-course, and Smokefeather took off after it again, hoping that Heatherclaw would be ahead of him and would be able to catch it before it found another hole to hide in.

Heatherclaw was right behined him . when he saw smomefeather going to block the hole he turned in the direction he anticipaded the rabbit would go . It lead him over a hill he waited there. Soon he herd pawsteps and the rabbit ran right into his claws. He bite down on its neck killing it the taste of its warm blood filling his senses. "Great work we are a great hunting team two Nice rabbits and a blackbird." He purred in satisfaction

Smokefeather slowed when he saw that Heatherclaw had caught the rabbit. The grey tom pricked his ears to pick up the words his Clanmate spoke above the howl of the wind. Smokefeather nodded, deciding not to point out that the blackbird was a measly thing and that the rabbits were skinnier than he would have liked. Any prey in the harsh weather of leaffall was good prey.
"We should probably head back, then," he meowed. "Silverfrost might wonder what's become of us," he added with a chuckle. The deputy often chided him for wandering out on his own, but he always figured taking initiative was a good thing.
